Module 1 - Transect from New York Harbor to Albany

Sun rises over the New York Harbor as SUNY Stony Brook School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences' 80 foot R/V Seawolf heads out for a day off shore.
Steve Schimmrich (right) and Bob Cassidy (left) both of SUNY Ulster, tighten the head on a core sleeve in preparation for gravity coring.
Background on coring and trawling locations is provided by Tim Kenna (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory).
The group zodiacs to shore for a geology discussion at Bear Mountain State Park.
A juvenile Atlantic sturgeon, only 14.5cm in length, poses for the camera before being returned to the river. Brian Jensen, fisheries biologist from the College of St. Rose, holds this impressive carp from a freshwater trawl.
Brian Jensen (College of St. Rose), Peter Jensen (Dalton School), Steve Schimmrich (SUNY Ulster), Paul Benzing (College of St. Rose) and Tim Kenna (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) prepare for coring. Sharon Williams, English professor at Hamilton College and Alex Dunn, Professor at Pace University Law School running phosphates in the wet lab.
Karin Limburg (SUNY ESF) leads the group on an urban stream assessment on the Poesten Kill in Troy. Peter Groffman (Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies) summarizes our riparian assessment of the Casper Kill in Poughkeepsie.
Geologist Steve Schimmrich (SUNY Ulster) perches atop billion year old granitic gneiss to discuss the formation of the Hudson Highlands. Steve Stanne (New York State DEC Hudson River Estuary Program) leads the group in fishing with a seine net in Poughkeepsie.
A tired but happy group returns in from a day offshore. Transiting the length of the Hudson River offers amazing views of the Hudson Highlands as they dip their toes into the river.

Module 2 - Transect from Albany to New York Harbor

Participants hiked into the base of the Kaaterskill Falls, favorite spot of Hudson River painters. After some background on the Hudson River School of Painting, participants try their hand at sketching.
As a service learning project the group cleared the area around the estuary educational kiosk. All hands on deck for coring just north of Poughkeepsie.
Letting our the float lines for the trawl net. A successful morning trawl off Rockaway Beach ends with fresh caught squid turned into calamari!
A summer flounder showing off its famous flat body, large mouth and eyes migrated to the top of the head. Uncovering garnet crystal deposits in the Adirondacks with Bruce Selleck (Colgate College).
The group tours the Yonkers sewage treatment plant. Marilyn Power (L) (Sarah Lawrence College) discusses the redevelopment of downtown Yonkers on the walking tour with Judy Halsted (R) (Skidmore College).
Dorothy Peteet (R) (NASA/GISS) provides an overview of marsh ecology prior to leading the group in fieldwork. A trip into the heart of Staten Island's Saw Mill Marsh.
Yourha Kang (Iona College), Chris Bowser (Marist College and NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program) and Ann Powers (Pace University Law School) chart water chemistry data from the CTD. The end of another River Summer - the group poses for a final photo!
